This collection of work represents Nakayama's daily efforts improve his design eye, skills for commercial lettering and sign painting, while continuing to study and explore letterforms.
The group of works on paper represent Nakayama's practice workflow, starting with how he likes to warm up in his studio, with repeated, consistent vertical brush strokes that fill up a piece of paper. The works then move into the repeated practice of single stroke letters and figures(numerals), before he works on lettering studies, explorations, and layout studies. Some of the wall of paper pieces were actually for commercial purposes, as well as lettering that were to be digitally re-produced.
日本での初個展 WORK IN PROGRESS では僕がこれまでに行ってきた筆によるアルファベット文字の練習から試作、研究、また実際に仕事として書いた文字やポスター、そしてアート寄りな実験的アプローチから出来上がった作品、練習紙を使ったコラージュ作品などを一挙公開しています。
デジタルの時代に入ってから４０年近くが経ちます。そんな中、僕が取り上げている題材で今も昔も変わらないことは「文字を読むのは人の目」であるということです。優れた文字は幾何学だけで解決できるものではなく最終的には「鍛えられた目」がデザインの決め手になると僕は信じています。
大まかに言うとこの展示では実際自分が日々どのようなことをして「（判断する）目」を鍛えているかが少なからず伺えるようになっています。また判断の基準材料になりえる内容だったり文字に対しての考え方の参考となる内容の書物も展示に合わせて幾つか紹介されています。
